The name skater wood isn't named after a particular type of wood per se, more a technique used to make skateboard decks. This technique is employed by layering thin pieces of wood called veneer on top of one another. In some cases each individual ply is then colour stained as it makes them easier to count. The significance? Well apparently technical skateboards use 7-9plies, whilst a generic skateboard uses 5... We just think they look cool.
